Watched the Dean of Doom episode about this set the other day and remembered
that I'd been toying around with doing an episode 1 run, but for some reason
never actually got around to it. I really enjoy the nostalgic beats of the
original Doom II maps, though maps 9 and 10 start to get a bit sprawling and
leaning more towards the bad bits of Doom II's design rather than the good.

Did a few hours practice to remember all the routes and where all of map10's
secrets are, then only four attempts to get this. Two resets on map01 due to
crappy starts and one death by shotgunner attrition in map02.

map01: Nice little twist on map01, though it keeps the trait of having ever
so slightly too many imps. I'm not super good at chainsaw combat, and
the end room was a bit sloppy, but under a minute is good.

map02: I remember having trouble with stragglers in this map when first
routing it. Some idiot shotgunner would always wander off down the
underhalls. Had a couple this time, but managed to clean them up
without having backtrack half of the map.

map03: Great map. Keeps all the right bits of the Gantlet with a much nicer
combat flow. I missed the jump from the blue key, and fell off the
platform after the teleporter cause I was looking for a chaingunner
who often decides to wander back to the starting area.

map04: Another cool map which keeps all the nostalgic focus of the original,
while compacting and tightening up the combat.

map05: I will take this over the original waste tunnels any day. Points
awarded for no stupid trapdoor floors, but points off for missing out
the signature Sandy green torch secret.

map06: Another improvement over the original. This map gave me a bit of
trouble when I first played it. Falling is either game over or a huge
health hit. Nearly died to a volley of rev rockets, good thing I saved
       the megasphere till the end.

map07: Not quite as impactful as the original, but I like the dead simple
       twist on the combat.

map08: Tricks and traps is one of my favourite maps from Doom II. I think
its hard to recapture the weird, off kilter, puzzley nature of each
of the rooms in the original after 30 years of community map design.
This map feels a bit underwhelming given the source material. Wasted
a bfg shot with the two PEs cause I bumped my head on a computer
panel and fell in the soup. Somehow still got both with the second
shot. Also Failed to get any in-fighting going with the cyber.

map09: The best part of the pit is the midi. I didn't really bother trying
to work out what the optimal order for the elevators is, just picked
a route and went with it. Having to take lift number 2 just to kill
a handful of enemies is annoying, but I think there's probably a
better way to route it. Easy to miss enemies in this map. Another
wasted bfg shot at the end because I forgot to pre open the door.

map10: This map is a bit of a mixed bag like the original. The play on the
cube room with the cyber is cool, though the secret invuln mostly
defangs it. Managed to remember where all the secrets where, but
forgot about the yellow switch for some reason. I've no idea where
the pain elemental at the end was from.

map11: This map is fantastic. Short, intense, and very atmospheric. Going
in with a bfg does tame it a fair amount, even though I butchered
half of my shots. A couple of cacos have a habit of getting lost in
       the void.
