after a bit of time, we've returned to our next index map, and it's definitely
one of the more infamous ones in this tier. it's a full-scale, wall-to-wall
assault right from the start. getting yourself armed and surviving the start
is absolutely the hardest part here. a lot of people make a mad dash for the
BFG, doing a precise strafe-run to get over to the other side of the small
cavern it's in. personally though i don't like this strategy, because it's
annoyingly finicky, and it's more or less all-or-nothing - either you pull off
the jump and kill enough things to not die immediately, or you fail one or more
of those steps and you may as well just start over. so after a good bit of
experimentation i landed on the strategy here. wait for the cyberdemon to
start infighting, run around to the super shotgun, spring the revenant trap,
then look for an opportunity to sneak into the room with all the weapons. here
i managed it more or less immediately, but it's possible to delay things quite
a bit and have the infighting play out further if necessary. this room - and
especially the SW corner - is about as safe as you're going to get. the
cyberdemon in the central structure is the biggest threat, and some cacos will
wander in from the lava pit area, but otherwise, the nearby cyberdemon is too
large to enter and all those enemies you've woken up will come around and fight
the cyberdemon for you. then once the coast is relatively clear you can pop
out and finish it off one ssg blast at a time - it should hopefully be nearly
dead. we also take out that central cyberdemon - you could leave it to handle
more infighting later but imo it's more trouble than it's worth. but with that
you have more or less free reign of the level and can wrap things up in
shortish order. you still have to deal with the spider mastermind and
specters, which are probably still asleep on top of that radsuit you need. the
yellow key trap can be a little spicy but there's a ton of cells at this point.
i think i hit a specter or something here dealing with the archviles that put
me on the back foot the rest of the map. but we've got enough of a resource
lead to coast to the finish. really the only trick left is to get the last
mastermind and cyberdemon to infight. this gotcha rematch took way longer to
resolve than it usually does... but it is what is and we won out in the end.
