this might be the beefiest map in all of speed of doom. not the highest
monster count, that'll come later. but this map has far less mercy. lots of
places in this map are easy to get in but hard to get out of - the baron moats
and most of the second area in particular. there's also a lot of pop-up
monsters and other mischief included. and a platforming/invincibility/avj
combo that's never particularly fun. but the very start of the demo is
probably the hardest part due to the extreme density of opposition. i have
this reasonably consistent strategy of running in a circle and hitting each
cyber as we go past, which ensures we can escape without running out of ammo.
the popup cyber that blocks your escape though is incredibly annoying and
unpredictable. here it went out by the pyramid and did a bunch of infighting
there. helpful, but it meant i had a lot of baron cleanup to do in the interim
in the first room. there's somewhat unfortunately a lot of running in circles
here as all the monsters beat each other to death, but eventually it becomes
safe enough to jump down and deal with the revenants in the back. you can mix
it up with the bfg and circling around them if you want, but i find that pretty
hazardous. the finale unfortunately is more annoying than hard, i'd say.
there's a secret invuln behind the start area, requiring a somewhat precise
strafejump. then you have to sprint to the other end of the map and get any of
the many archviles there to jump you up to a second invincibility. we actually
do manage that without much trouble. without this, i'm not sure there's a
reasonably safe way to handle the encounter with so many archviles and so
little cover. we also deal with the cybers in the back while the invuln is
still running. there's a lot of cacos and pain elementals that come in and
cleaning them up is pretty time consuming, especially if you blew through a lot
of cells. there's a little bit more with a few tricks and traps (picking up
the red or orange key triggers the four archviles on the other side) but if
you've made it this far it shouldn't pose too much trouble.
