DeHackEd Patching Instructions (APPLIES TO DOOM2.EXE VERSION 1.9 AND DOOM2P.EXE FOR DOS ONLY, NOT SOURCE PORTS).

Note: DeHackEd must be run in DOS or a DOS emulator like DOSBox. It will most likely work in older versions of Windows that were based on DOS, such as Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and Me and possibly in earlier NT-based versions like Windows XP before the command prompt stopped supporting fullscreen DOS applications (This functionality was first removed in Windows Vista if I remember correctly). DOS applications won't work at all in 64-Bit versions of Windows regardless so a virtual machine or an emulator like DOSBox must be used on modern 64-Bit Windows. (I'm intentionally using 32-Bit Windows 10 on my modern PC because I like legacy software support even though I have multiple computers from the 90's too :D)

Step 1: Download DeHackEd from here https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/utils/exe_edit/dhe31

Step 2 (REAL DOS): Extract the contents and copy the "dhe31" directory to your DOS PC using a floppy disk or CD-ROM and place it at the root of your C: drive. (If your hard drive uses a different letter, substitute that C for this step and replace all references to the C: drive in the DEHACKED.INI file from D87BETA.ZIP to match your drive letter)

Step 2 (DOSBox): Extract the contents and copy the "dhe31" directory to a folder containing the DOOM2 subdirectory you usually mount in DOSBox. (Example: Folder to mount is C:\DOSBOX and inside it will be C:\DOSBOX\DHE31 and C:\DOSBOX\DOOM2)

Step 3: Copy the extracted contents of D87BETA.ZIP to your DOOM2 directory and copy the extracted DEHACKED.INI file from D87BETA.ZIP to your DHE31 directory.

Step 4: Make a copy of DOOM2.EXE or DOOM2P.EXE and rename it "87DOOM.EXE" to match the name in the custom DEHACKED.INI.

Step 5: Run DeHackEd in real DOS or DOSBox, press "L" once the program has loaded, press enter to view a list of files, select D87BETA.DEH (this should be in your DOOM2 directory), and then press "W" to write the changes to 87DOOM.EXE.

Step 6: Press "Esc" and once the program has closed, type D87BETA in your DOOM2 directory to run the game. (D87BETA is a batch file that tells 87DOOM.EXE to load D87BETA.WAD automatically so you don't need to type "87DOOM.EXE -FILE D87BETA.WAD" manually)

Step 7: Enjoy the DOOM 87 Beta!
